Round 16

16.01 WR
Kevin Curtis
By TC Cannon
The young, semi-polished, Curtis gives Bulger and the Rams a
positive 3rd WR target. He could very possibly be this year's
Brandon Stokley. He was selected over WR Gaffney and PK Stover.
( I really considered claiming PK Stover here and hoping
to get Curtis 20 slots later. Yet, I chickened out and drafted a
player I really wanted in this format.)

16.02 TE
Ben Watson
By Duane Cahill
With a good tight end in the fold in Bubba Franks, I'm going to take a
swing at an increasingly important position and grab the New England
tight end. Before Watson was injured last season, he was on his
way to becoming the predominant tight end for the Pats. Word out
of camp is now that the team plans on using him and not Daniel Graham
as their main pass catching TE. TEs have been the greatest
beneficiaries of the five-yard chuck rule, and with that
transformation, it's more important that you have two of them on your
team who can score. In Franks and Watson, I'm confident that I
have that. |

16.03 QB
Billy Volek
By Dolfi | Walls
Walls’ Take - Note
to Webmaster –
can we somehow hide this analysis from all ‘Non-McNair
Owners???’ I have been bugging Dolfi to take Volek for about 3 rounds. I
don’t like our QB situation one bit, but this pick makes me
much more comfortable, Not ‘ both feet in a tub of ice water
after mowing two acres of grass comfortable’ but pretty darn
comfortable. Please note – I don’t have two acres of land,
but if I did, I would be putting my end-gams in a tub of
ice-water after each lawn cutting.
Anyway – if
you take McNair, you must get Volek, somehow, someway. McNair
has not done well with injury issues. Last year was quite
frankly atrocious for him. McNair started 16 games in 2002, but
not since then and before 2002, he hadn’t accomplished that
feat since 1998.
I believe that
Volek is a better fantasy QB than McNair (look at my Bennett
analysis), but McNair is a proven winner, that’s why he
starts. If you can squirrel Volek away using a roster spot, you
should take him in your draft
- and hold on. Chances are McNair won’t last all
season, make sure you have his very capable backup in your
pocket going into the season.

16.04 PK
Matt Stover
By Shannon O'Leary
Stover
is a solid performer each year. Each year he is in the top 10 in
fantasy kickers. I had Stover ranked just below Longwell a
couple of rounds ago and when I saw him still on the board, I
decided he was worth taking. Stover plays for a weaker offense
and that can translate into more long range field goal
opportunities, also the Ravens play in lower scoring games where
they rely heavily on the kicker.
Kickers
are very similar in points each year, but I figured that between
Stover and Longwell I should be able to increase my overall
point total by 20 to 25 points over the course of the year.

Jason Hanson

16.06 RB
Brandon Jacobs
By Del Pilar | Bonini
Who
We Took and Why:
We selected Jacobs here because we felt the need to handcuff
our running backs if possible, and he was the only backup of any
value after RB Mewelde Moore – who would have been our
backup for RB Michael Bennett – was already selected. We felt
it wouldn’t behoove us to select either Cincinnati Bengals RBs
Kenny Watson or Chris Perry to back up RB Rudi Johnson.
Other
Candidates Considered:
We really wanted to take a shot at Denver Broncos RB Maurice
Clarett here, solely based on upside alone. However, we also
knew the need of getting a backup running back on our team. We
discussed briefly taking a second kicker, ultimately feeling we
could hold off another round.
Current
Strategy:
With our running backs in place, we will look for our backup
place kicker and defensive team in the final two rounds of the
draft. We want options at both spots that will provide upside,
as well as some steady production. |

16.07 DT
Buccaneers
By Jerome Hickerson
How far the mighty Bucs have
fallen! Once a defense taken in the top 2 or 3, I now get them
as the 12th defense taken. And frankly, I didn’t
want them here. I had predrafted
and the Bucs were my 2nd
choice. My first choice, Brandon Jacobs, was taken off the
board just before my pick.
I am not
unhappy with the Bucs as my #2
defense. I think they are likely to produce hit and miss
defensive numbers this season, but along with the Steelers, I
should be able to more than hold my own at defense.

16.08 PK
Rian Lindell
By Tony Holm
My "perfect" kicker
draft plan that was concocted many rounds ago, was to take
Jason Hanson here then follow up that pick with Rian Lindell.
Neither are considered top kickers yet I really like them both
this year and Lindell for sure I thought would last till my
next pick.
With Hollar scooping up Hanson
three picks before me I decided to not gamble and just take
Lindell here as I really didn’t want to lose him in this
draft.
Over the course of the season,
Lindell was the 11th ranked K tied with Janikowski
and just a hair below Mike Vanderjagt. Lindell really stepped
it up over the last 6 weeks of the season as he and Jason
Hanson tied for 2nd best production in the league.
Lindell! Hanson! Aahh.. What could have been.
My K draft strategy every year
is to target K’s from teams that have good D’s as I
believe field position is the most important factor for a
fantasy Kicker. The good offense K’s always go first in a
draft but my philosophy is to let them go then bargain hunt
from the good D teams.
This year the top 3 D’s are
Baltimore, New England and Buffalo. I knew Vinatieri wasn’t
going to be on my team but if the opportunity presented itself
I would have taken Stover as my #1 and if that fell apart,
then wait and get Lindell later.

16.09 DT
Cowboys
By Brady Tinker
Bill Parcells had his fill of
leaving the defense to Mike Zimmer and his 4-3. Little
linebackers are out - big fast linebackers are in and so is
the 3-4.
The major acquisition in Free
Agency was a new Defensive Tackle that can play the 3-4, Jason
Ferguson came over to fill the middle and the secondary got a
big boost with the addition of CB's Aaron Glenn and Anthony
Henry. Also, it helps
that the NFC East has a couple of lousy offenses in NY and
Washington too.

16.10 PK
Josh Brown
By Duane Cahill
Josh Brown is a kicker. I
need a kicker.
What more can you say for your
16th pick in an 18-player draft? I know what I want my
roster to look like, and I want a backup at every position.
Why? David Akers is a heckuva a kicker, but despite the
fact that he was third in FanEx scoring last season, he had
six weeks where he scored five points or less. Brown's
job is to pick up the slack in those weeks.
Why Brown? Tough call.
I could just as easily have gone defense here. But while
I see several similar kickers in this spot, I also have four
defenses and four receivers I'd be just as happy to have.
You have to take the three players is some order. At
this point, you're just rolling dice and hoping someone pans
out but let's face it - the difference between the #8 and the
#14 kicker last year was nine points. I don't see that
being the difference between winning and losing this league.
While I'm at it, this will largely be my analysis for the
second defense I select. Only when I take my sleeper at
WR5 might I have the opportunity to do a backflip - well,
figuratively, anyway.
